Spectra Logic’s StorCycle Provides New Path to Tier 2 Storage
Data storage vendor Spectra Logic has unveiled a new storage management application for businesses that aims to cut storage costs by as much as 70% by implementing what the company calls a “perpetual tier” of secondary storage.
The StorCycle software, which is available immediately, is designed to be used for public cloud storage, existing network-attached storage or with Spectra Logic storage hardware, while continuing to give users access to their secondary data.
Because most business data is secondary data, by shifting it to a secondary or perpetual tier made up of slower and cheaper storage hardware, businesses can save a large amount of money while keeping their primary data on faster systems for immediate use. This has been an ongoing trend in storage that continues to be refined by vendors including Spectra Logic.
StorCycle storage software automatically scans primary storage data for inactive files and migrates them to a secure perpetual tier, which includes any desired combination of cloud storage, object storage, network-attached storage (NAS) and tape for storing data and making it easily retrievable by users. In addition, a smaller primary storage tier is used to shrink backup and recovery windows, reduce costs and increase overall performance.
StorCycle also includes a project archive feature which allows users to tag and move entire project data sets to a perpetual storage tier, providing a place for projects to be accessed for further analysis, categorization, comparison and preservation.
“We’ve seen customers not move ahead with data management solutions, primarily because of the costs,” Jeff Braunstein, the director of product management for Spectra Logic, told Channel Futures. “We wanted to move forward with something simpler and less expensive.”
The aim for StorCycle was to provide the secondary storage that Spectra Logic is known for while providing affordability and long-term access to the stored data for users, while connecting it to a company’s primary data as well, he said.
“By us being able to present a more affordable solution, we think we can get customers to implement a more complete data management solution,” said Braunstein. “We’re trying to make a seamless two-tier model, with a primary tier and a perpetual tier and then find that data on whichever tier it is on. We do think that’s unique compared to other solutions in the marketplace.”
Betsy Doughty, Spectra Logic’s vice president of corporate marketing who runs the company’s worldwide channel program, said that Spectra’s more than 900 partners can add StorCycle to their offerings as a less expensive and less complicated way to help customers solve their storage problems.
As part of the new StorCycle product, Spectra Logic partners will gain access to online and video training for the new application, as well as tools and resources they will need to offer it to their customers, said Doughty.
One channel partner, Jeff DiNisco, the CTO of p1 Technologies in Manhattan Beach, California, told Channel Futures that StorCycle integrates across several third-party platforms, which will allow his company to expand its reach into new…
