Zettaset Adds Reliablity Features to Hadoop Big Data

Hadoop can process huge volumes of Big Data, but only as long as the software keeps running smoothly. Zettaset is targeting that need for high performance and availability in the open source Big Data ecosystem with a new feature for its enterprise Hadoop product that provides automatic failover for Hadoop using a recently patented technology.
The technology, based on a patent Zettaset received in November 2013, is now part of Zettaset Orchestrator, which is designed to provide a variety of extra services to enhance the core open source Hadoop code. Orchestrator, which Zettaset said is compatible with all of the "leading branded Hadoop distributions," previously focused on adding extra security to Hadoop. It now offers more robust reliability as well.
Zettaset is pitching the functionality as "future-proof," since it "is designed to cover any existing Hadoop service as well as any new services which may be introduced in the future."
The company announced the new feature at the Strata conference in Santa Clara, Calif. The news came shortly after another product announcement from Zettaset regarding a Business Intelligence connector for Orchestrator, which extends Orchestrator's data-security features to protect Hadoop data when it is accessed by BI applications.
From the channel perspective, this is yet another sign of continuing interest among vendors in products that simplify Hadoop deployment. That is particularly true in Zettaset's case, since Orchestrator is not just another Hadoop distribution that adds extra functionality to the core Hadoop code, but rather adds another layer of features to Hadoop distributions that already exist.
Zettaset's core message is that open source software itself is often not ready for the enterprise, even when it comes wrapped up with extra features to improve usability. In many cases that would be a poor business approach, since a lot of open source software is ready for prime time out-of-the-box. But Hadoop, so far, has carved out an ecosystem where adoption is highly dependent on value-added features delivered by vendors such as Zettaset, which may well find plenty of demand for its software.
