WaveMaker has released a Docker-based cloud platform software that managed service providers (MSPs) can use to incorporate application platform-as-a-service (aPaaS) offerings into their portfolios.

The Mountain View, California-based aPaaS provider has launched WaveMaker Cloud, a Docker PaaS for MSPs.

WaveMaker CEO Samir Ghosh told MSPmentor that WaveMaker Cloud allows users to set up and manage a Docker-based cloud on a private or public cloud or bare metal.

Ghosh pointed out that WaveMaker Cloud offers MSPs:

WaveMaker Cloud also features a built-in load balancer that automatically synchronizes new Docker containers for horizontal scaling, WaveMaker said.

“Developers are moving in droves to Docker,” Ghosh said in a prepared statement. “But Docker is not an out-of-the-box solution … Enterprises need a PaaS to handle the compounded complexity of varied workloads and other diverse needs.”

Ghosh added that he believes WaveMaker Cloud can help MSPs better manage their IT resources and lower their operating expenses.

“Using WaveMaker Cloud ourselves for our services on top of Amazon Web Services (AWS), we literally cut our own costs by 80 percent,” Ghosh added. “You don’t get this kind of savings from Docker alone.”

How do Docker containers work?

Docker containers operate like virtual machines (VMs) but are much more portable than VMs and enable users to quickly move apps between clouds, data center VMs and laptops.

Bloomberg recently reported that Docker Inc., the company behind the open source Docker platform, is valued at around $400 million.

And as demand for Docker containers increases, Ghosh noted his company will continue to search for new ways to provide Docker support to MSPs and their customers.

“We recognize the need for MSPs to address their market needs, so we are working on things like localizations and industry capabilities for finance [and] insurance. We’re happy to hear from MSPs with specific needs for their markets,” Ghosh said.
