Symantec Protection Network, MessageLabs: Coming Together?

Symantec Protection NetworkFor more than two months now, the Symantec Protection Network (SPN) blog has been silent. The SPN blog tracks Symantec’s own SaaS (software as a service) strategy and larger industry trends. So, what’s behind the silence? And where is Symantec heading next with SaaS? The VAR Guy has found some clues.

Richard Goodwin, the main voice on the SPN blog, remains with Symantec but in a new role. “As you have surmised, I have changed roles a bit as we continue to grow our SaaS organization,” he wrote in an email response to The VAR Guy.

Goodwin added:

“The new group, which is comprised of both MessageLabs and SPN team members, continues to build on the SPN platform and there will be new developments in the SPN and Online Backup world in the near future. My role has shifted to a bit more of marketing/competitive analysis than in the past, and Darren Niller (with whom you’ve spoken in the past) has taken over the Online Backup and Storage services proper from a Product Management standpoint.”

Symantec acquired MessageLabs, which specializes in SaaS-oriented email security, in October 2008. It’s safe to say Symantec is now connecting the dots between MessageLabs and SPN.

But what about the SPN blog? Goodwin concedes it has “gone a little silent in the reorganization,” but updates are coming soon as Symantec prepares some related announcements. Also of note, Symantec has launched a community site for SMB/Enterprise products and services, located at http://www.symantec.com/connect/

Thanks for the update, Richard. The VAR Guy looks forward to seeing your next blog entry — and an update on SPN/MessageLabs — whenever you push “publish.”
