Symantec Cloud Could Get Partner Boost

The Symantec cloud strategy — known simply as Symantec.cloud — could get a major boost from channel partners including VARs and MSPs. The reason: John Eldh, formerly VP of sales for Symantec.cloud, is shifting into the Symantec Channel Chief position. Talkin’ Cloud believes the move could trigger improved synergies between Symantec’s cloud services, managed services and traditional channel partner initiatives.

In an ideal would, Symantec could have enjoyed first-mover advantage in the cloud — where storage services and security services are wildly popular. But Symantec’s cloud strategy took time to come into focus.

The Symantec cloud effort began to hit its stride in February 2011, when Symantec transitioned from hosting brands to the all-encompassing Symantec.cloud brand. More recently, Symantec has positioned Backup Exec for the cloud.

Now, Eldh is jumping from his Symantec.cloud sales post to Symantec’s channel chief post for the Americas. Is that a loss for Symantec’s cloud strategy? On the contrary, I believe it’s a gain. Based on his cloud experience, Eldh should be able to connect the dots between traditional channel resellers and those that want to focus on recurring revenues and the cloud.
