The study shows that the majority of organizations believe that an IT infrastructure can enable competitive advantage or optimize revenue and profit.

A new study reveals that internal IT infrastructures might not be able accommodate the needs and demands of the big four: mobile, social, data and cloud.

Titled “IT Infrastructure Matters,” the study, conducted by IBM‘s (IBM) Institute for Business Value, reports that less than 10 percent of organizations surveyed say their existing IT infrastructures are fully prepared to handle growth from the next wave of technology trends.

While this may be the case, 70 percent of organizations recognize that properly equipped IT infrastructures can enable competitive advantage or optimize revenue and profit, but only 22 percent of companies surveyed have a well-defined enterprise IT infrastructure strategy roadmap.

The good news for IT is that 62 percent of respondents plan to increase their IT infrastructure spend over the next 12 to 18 months.

“In our discussions with technical leaders, we are seeing that the historic shifts transforming business and technology are creating a greater need and urgency to deploy a computing infrastructure that can support their business results,” IBM Systems and Technology Group Senior Vice President Tom Rosamilia said in a statement.

The report is based on responses from 750 CTOs, CIOs and other technology executives in 18 countries and 19 industries.
