Sqrrl CEO Mark Terenzoni says the company's growing base of enterprise customers have created a large market opportunity for Sqrrl.

Sqrrl has snagged a $5.2 million Series A round of funding for its Sqrrl Enterprise NoSQL database powered by Apache Accumulo.

Existing investors Atlas Venture and Matrix Partners led this round of funding which is earmarked to further the development and commercialization of Sqrrl Enterprise.

Sqrrl CEO Mark Terenzoni said in a prepared statement that the company's growing base of enterprise customers have created a large market opportunity for Sqrrl.

"The funding enables us to accelerate the growth of our sales and support organizations to meet the growing demand for our platform," he said. "At the same time we will continue to build our engineer team and develop innovative product features."

Additionally, Sqrrl released Sqrrl Enterprise Version 1.2, which includes a number of new security, analytics and performance features.

Sqrrl was founded by former computer scientists from the National Security Agency (NSA). The company is headquartered in Cambridge, Mass.
