Spiceworks IT Survey Reveals New Spending on Cloud and MSP Services

Hosted cloud services remain hot, Windows 10 upgrades are on the way and computer security remains a weak point of IT infrastructure. So says the latest State of IT Report from Spiceworks, which went live this week.

The survey took place in July 2015 and involved 839 respondents from the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa. Key findings include:

  • 59 respondents believe their organizations are underinvesting in security, which will account for about 6 percent of IT budgets on average in the coming year. That's despite high-profile security breaches in recent years, which only 26 percent of respondents said have prompted changes to security policies at their organizations.

  • Spending on new hardware and software will decrease only slightly at IT organizations in the coming year.  Upgrades to Microsoft (MSFT) Windows 10 will be a major driver of new software spending, as will migrations away from Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005—both of which have or will soon cease to be supported officially by Microsoft.

  • Spending on managed services will increase, from 10 percent last year to 13 percent in the coming one.

  • Spending on cloud services will increase in the coming year, led by investment in email hosting, web hosting and backup-as-a-service solutions.

Perhaps the most notable survey finding is that IT budgets on average will increase by only 1 percent in the coming year. That spending priorities are shifting as overall resources remain about the same underlines just how significantly the trends described above will impact the IT world.
