Spasiba: DataSpace Opens First Russian Tier III Data Center

cloud-computing2

You’ve heard about international cloud computing expansion into the Asia Pacific region and India. But demand for cloud and data center services is growing in Eastern Europe, too, and Moscow-based data center and colocation facility manager DataSpace has opened its first Tier III facility in Russia.

In short, the Tier III certification for the so-called DataSpace 1 facility means that it will “never shut down to maintain, replace or upgrade facilities equipment,” according to a DataSpace spokesperson. The certification, awarded by the “unbiased” third-party consultants and researchers at the Uptime Institute, is designed to help service providers assure customers that even their most stringent reliability needs will be met.

In a prepared statement, DataSpace CEO David Hamner offered some big-picture perspective:

“This is an important milestone in the modernization of Russia’s infrastructure and supports Moscow becoming a financial center. Financial institutions and other modern enterprises, both global and local, rely on uninterrupted and secured data processing operations and we’ve introduced the industry standard facility product to the market. When we looked at the market in 2008, we saw a lot of false claims about Tier III and knew from the beginning we would need to demonstrate what it really means and bring a truly world-class data center to the market.”

The cloud is no longer limited to North American shores, and I think we’re going to look back at 2011 as the year that the industry truly started to take the global view. We’ll be watching for more signs of the phenomenon, so stay tuned to TalkinCloud for more.
