There are more leadership changes afoot at Spanning Cloud Apps. The cloud-based backup solutions vendor has appointed a new vice president of Marketing to drive further awareness of the company’s brand and generate more demand for its data protection offerings.
Melanie Meyer Sommer has joined the Spanning Cloud team from SailPoint, where she led the marketing and communications teams and helped to launch the company. Sommer also helped to establish SailPoint in the identity and access management space.
Sommer has more than 20 years of marketing, sales and communications experience, and has worked with a variety of companies, from business-to-business marketing agencies to early-stage technology startups to large technology companies. She has worked with several large companies, including IBM/Tivoli, Motorola, Sun Microsystems, Compaq and Waveset.
Sommer’s appointment comes shortly on the heels of a change in overall leadership. A little more than a month ago, founder and CEO Charlie Wood stepped aside to take over the chairman position to promote chief revenue officer Jeff Erramouspe to the CEO position.
A few weeks ago, Spanning also expanded its offerings beyond Google Apps into the Salesforce.com space.
“Melanie’s extensive background covers all aspects of innovative marketing and she brings exceptional enterprise security, cloud and compliance expertise to Spanning,” Erramouspe said in a prepared statement. “She is a great new addition to the executive team and will play an integral role in the company as we expand our product offerings.”
Sommer joins the company at an interesting time—just as it has made its transition out of the startup phase. Spanning looks to have big plans for the future.
