Hybrid cloud is becoming more popular among enterprises, which is reflected in new data from RightScale.

RightScale’s “2015 State of the Cloud Report” showed that many enterprises are focused on implementing a hybrid cloud strategy that encompasses public and private clouds along with existing virtualized environments. Additionally, RightScale researchers found that enterprise central IT teams are now making the majority of cloud spending decisions in organizations worldwide.

“As enterprise IT has become more open to public cloud and more comfortable with cloud security, it is now in a strong position to broker cloud services to internal customers and drive cloud adoption forward,” RightScale CEO Michael Crandell said in a prepared statement.

Other RightScale findings included:

  • 93 percent of organizations said they are running applications or experimenting with infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS). Also, 82 percent said they have a hybrid cloud strategy, up from 74 percent in 2014.

  • 88 percent of organizations said they use public cloud, compared with 63 percent that use private cloud.

  • 62 percent of enterprises reported that central IT makes the majority of cloud spending decisions.

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) adoption was 57 percent, while Microsoft (MSFT) Azure IaaS adoption was 12 percent. Among enterprises, Azure IaaS narrowed the gap with 19 percent adoption versus AWS with 50 percent. Also, adoption of Google’s (GOOG’s) IaaS offering increased from 4 percent in 2014 to 9 percent in 2015.

  • Docker is already used by 13 percent of organizations, and 35 percent said they plan to use it.

What cloud trends should enterprises expect to see going forward? Kim Weins, RightScale’s vice president of marketing, told Talkin’ Cloud that she believes “enterprise cloud adoption has shifted from shadow IT to strategic adoption led by central IT teams.” She pointed out that she anticipates enterprise public cloud use will increase over the next year as well.

RightScale conducted its annual “State of the Cloud Survey” last month. The Santa Barbara, California-based enterprise cloud portfolio management solutions provider’s final report included responses from 930 technical professionals about their adoption of cloud computing.
