Oracle Server Executive Lands at Java PaaS Startup CloudBees

Former Oracle Senior VP of Server Technologies Steven Harris has landed at Java platform-as-a-service (PaaS) startup CloudBees as its new senior vice president of Products. It sounds like a good fit right off the bat: Harris is a widely recognized Java expert, and now he’ll manage CloudBees’ overall strategy and product roadmap.

Harris hyped his cloud move in a prepared statement:

“I am thrilled to join CloudBees – the company has shown an incredible capacity to innovate, demonstrated by its leadership in the rapidly emerging Platform as a Service market. Our depth of expertise with Java, and unique develop-and-deploy in the cloud approach empowers Java development teams to take control across the complete application lifecycle. CloudBees is revolutionizing the way Java applications are built and deployed, leading the way for reduced cost and time-to-market with the cloud, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.”

In 1997, Harris’ first assignment was preparing the Java virtual machine for Oracle 8i, according to the press release. Later, he ended up involved in Oracle’s overall Java strategy, from Enterprise Edition technologies all the way to Oracle Application Server, WebLogic and GlassFish. So it’s obvious when he talks about CloudBees’ Java strategy, he probably knows what he’s talking about.

He’s right that PaaS and Java are both experiencing a ton of momentum in the cloud services market right now. We’ll be keeping a close eye on CloudBees’ progress, especially since we know the company will be attending next week’s Oracle JavaOne conference. So stay tuned for a deeper look at the CloudBees offering.
