Nimbula, providers of the so-called “cloud operating system,” is expanding its professional services offerings this week with the launch of Nimbula Cloud Migration Service, designed to help customers move from the public cloud over to private or hybrid deployments.What really interests me about Nimbula’s offering is the reasoning behind it, according to Nishan Sathyanarayan, Director of Professional Services at Nimbula in a prepared statement:
“Customers love the flexibility and self-service aspects of public clouds such as Amazon EC2. They often want those same benefits and control in a deployment model that uses both their own and public infrastructure. The only way to achieve the proper cloud economics in that case is to leverage commodity clouds and layer infrastructure and application services on top of them. By providing the technical design and migration plan, our customers can confidently execute a seamless migration into a robust and cost-effective private or hybrid cloud solution and balance their investment in public clouds.”
In that same press release, Nimbula said public clouds such as the aforementioned Amazon EC2 are great for businesses just getting started with the cloud. But after usage and capacity needs reach a certain point it just makes more financial sense to move some or all of your workloads away from a remote provider and on to on-premises cloud infrastructure.
If you go with Nimbula Cloud Migration Service, according to the company, you can expect a technical and operational analysis as part of a “comprehensive” plan for making that switch. And I’m sure said plan would include the usage of Nimbula Director, the company’s cloud management tool, which recently received support for distributed clouds.
