Nexsan, Toshiba Partner on FASTier Storage Virtualization
Storage and virtualization often go hand in hand, and storage company Nexsan has been looking to improve that all-important combination with the use of solid state drives. That’s why Nexsan has teamed up with Toshiba to put new SSD drives into its E5000 NAS storage devices. VARs working in virtualization or storage should read on for the speed specs …
Nexsan is calling the new speedy technology built into the E5000 “FASTier,” and by working with Toshiba, the E5000 series are now outfitted with Toshiba’s special “MKz001GZB” SSD drives. This new fleet of platterless drives boasts a 6Gbps interface and 500/250 MBps read/write speed while also being ‘green,’ using only 6.5 watts during use.
Because of the SSD technology, the E5000 is uniquely positioned to be used with VMware, Xen, Citrix and other high-level virutalization technologies that rely on fast NAS storage with multiple random write times. Nexsan and Toshiba say the melding of their technology now allows for a 5-times boost NAS write time when compared to traditional NAS virtualization solutions. VARs working this space will likely want to move the E5000 into large-scale enterprise virtualization deployments where downtime is unacceptable, or optimization is key to fixing virtualization woes.
Currently, the E5000 series is only available to Nexsan partners (not Toshiba) and come in two flavors: E5110 and E5310. Pricing starts at just under $15,000, so VARs may be able to even sell the device into the upper-end of the SMB range. If Nexsan is your speed but the mid-market is your range, be sure to check out Nexsan’s recent launch of the E-Series storage platform.
