The supply of direct interconnection solutions to public cloud providers increased again this week with news out of Lightower Fiber Networks that it was now supporting Amazon Direct Connect as part of its fiber-based direct connectivity offerings.

Lightower is a Boxborough, Massachusetts.-based provider of custom, high-capacity network services that the company noted offerings customers “optimal application and business performance.” And through its portfolio of switched Ethernet, wavelengths and dark fiber services, Lightower is offering its customers connections to Amazon Web Services at speeds ranging from 50Mbps to 500Mbps.

According to Lightower, the direct connectivity offering is ideal for organizations that require connections speeds under 1Gbps. The company also noted a few other benefits it believes it offers it customer base. Using Lightower, customers do not have to establish an incremental cross connect between Lightower and AWS, which the company noted makes for a cost-effective and overall less complex direct connectivity option.

“Always striving to enable superior network experiences for our customers, Lightower’s expanded access options open up AWS Direct Connect to a much larger portion of the market,” said Doug Dalissandro, chief revenue officer for Lightower, in a prepared statement. “Customers harnessing the power of the AWS cloud combined with the Lightower Network will experience the highest levels of network/cloud performance.”

Lightower first started supporting Amazon Direct Connect in late 2013, but the company geared its offering towards larger enterprises or those with the ability to pay for and use high-bandwidth direct connections to the public cloud service giant. The introduction of the new fiber options bring the offering down to mid-market businesses and those that simply don’t require at least 1Gbps speeds for direct connectivity.
