Kaseya Promotes Online Backup to MSPs and VARs

By samdizzy

Thousands of VARs and managed services providers (MSPs) already leverage Kaseya‘s remote management and monitoring (RMM) software. But now, Kaseya is extending its on-premise and SaaS-based tools to include more modules — including a new Kaseya Online Backup (KOB) module that could help VARs and MSPs to generate more recurring revenues.

Interestingly, Kaseya’s online backup software leverages Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3). While developing the Kaseya 2 managed services platform, I know Kaseya hit some bumps with Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the past year or two. The bumps were related to service level agreement (SLA) issues, but Kaseya insiders sound confident that the new KOB online backup module runs well with the Amazon S3 integration.

Also  of note: The Kaseya Online Backup module was developed in-house, according to Gerald Beaulieu, director of product marketing at Kaseya. KOB provides multi-platform (Windows and Mac OS X) support, and cloud-based folder and file backup service based on incremental and point in time changes. I stumbled onto a Kaseya Online Backup PDF that shares deeper details — including monthly pricing of $5 per seat and $0.20 per gigabyte of storage. The Kaseya Online Backup module is not to be confused with Kaseya Backup 4.0, a different solution based on technology from Acronis.

By building an online backup service, Kaseya is essentially pushing beyond its remote management and systems administration heritage, and could wind up competing with a range of online backup and cloud storage providers. However, Kaseya also promotes APIs (application programming interfaces), which could allow storage companies and other types of partners to plug into the Kaseya 2 platform. Some existing partners are listed here.

Still, it’s interesting to see Kaseya pushing into Online Backup with it’s own platform. We’ll be watching to see if VARs and MSPs embrace and promote Kaseya Online Backup to their end-customers.
