Jelastic is the latest company to link Java with Platform as a Service (PaaS). Indeed, Jelastic says ISVs can now develop applications directly from the cloud with no PC required. In other words, Jelastic now supports Java applications in the cloud from build through deployment.

With this update, Jelastic supports code changes and application rebuilding in the cloud, meaning that applications don’t have to uploaded and re-uploaded whenever there’s an update. The Jelastic platform can also grab source code from a version repository, either by the Git or SVN protocols, according to the press release.

It can also be used for simple dev/test environment swapping, prepping an application for production, or cloning one for test. Jelastic supports any Java Virtual Machine (JVM)-based application, including Java 6/7, JRuby, Groovy and Scala. It also supports databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL MariaDB, CouchDB and MongoDB. Jelastic includes NGINX for integrated load-balancing, as TalkinCloud’s previously discussed.

Sounds like a worthy addition to an intriguing PaaS — but I remain uncertain that there’s nearly enough differentiation amongst the many, many that have hit the cloud services market in the last few months for this to make a huge splash. Well, Jelastic, the ball is in your court: Prove me wrong.
