Intermedia Grows Hosted Exchange Business, Fights Google
Hosted email specialist Intermedia says it has experienced explosive growth in its Exchange 2010 customer base — and a spokesperson says that these numbers represent proof that Intermedia is leading Exchange’s charge against Google Apps. Here’s the scoop.
Intermedia has some impressive numbers in their press release to back its claim of Exchange 2010 market dominance: 1,400 direct customers with 20,000 mailboxes have been onboarded since the November 2009 launch; a 74 percent increase in partner mailbox sales; and 200 new partner sign-ups per month since launch.
And what does Intermedia attribute to this success? Their proprietary value-adds, of course. For instance, Intermedia offers customers and partners a tool to synchronize user passwords between hosted Exchange deployments and on-premises applications.
As for Google, Intermedia’s release includes a supporting quote from Guy Timberlake, CEO of the The American Small Business Coalition, where he praised Intermedia and Microsoft alike for providing better wireless device support, an enhanced Outlook Web Application, and other advantages over “alternative email platforms.” It doesn’t take the world’s greatest detective to figure out what search and SaaS giant he’s referring to.
Reading between the lines, what Intermedia is trying to say is that while Google Apps has certainly been a disruptive force in the hosted application market, it’s not enterprise ready — and what Microsoft and Intermedia has whipped up, well, is.
Google’s made enterprise moves of its own, but Exchange is still the standard in many workplaces. And ironically, Intermedia appears to be ahead of Microsoft’s own Exchange SaaS efforts in some areas. While Intermedia has offered Hosted Exchange 2010 since 2009, Microsoft itself continues to promote Exchange 2007 as the primary SaaS email platform within the Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS).
