Google Apps Marketplace: Six Months Later

The VAR Guy mentioned it in passing, but last Thursday brought the six month anniversary of the launch of the Google Apps Marketplace. The marketplace let ISVs of all shapes and sizes develop tools for the Google Apps SaaS productivity platform. Here’s a look back at the App Marketplace and some perspective on where it is now.

When the Google Apps Marketplace launched, The VAR Guy asked: “Who would have thought the killer app for Google Apps would be other apps?” The Apps Marketplace opened the door for ERP, CRM, social networking, and plenty of other functionality to be added to Google Apps domains for little or no cost.

Opportunities for channel partners have been slim, with profits only running at about $10/user/year. But The VAR Guy himself has some ideas on how developers can leverage Google Apps Script and come up with value adds on resold Google Apps services. With a reported 200 apps for 4 million and growing Google Apps users, the market is certainly there.

Despite the fact that the potential for the IT channel is still be sussed out, the Google Apps Marketplace remains one of Google’s key advantages over Microsoft BPOS – something Google isn’t keen on letting the channel forget.

Google is well-known for iteratively updating their cloud products behind the scenes, but how long before the Google Apps Marketplace is ready for VARs, MSPs, and ISVs to really profit?
