Google Apps Gets Multi-Domain Support

Previously, Google Apps administrators faced a challenge when migrating multiple domains from legacy systems to the cloud. Apparently, Google has addressed that problem. The official blog entry indicates that Google Apps now has the ability to manage multiple domains from a single control panel. Here’s the details.

That blog entry makes it sound simple: Within an organization, Google Apps users on different domains keep their e-mail address but can see colleagues on the other domains in the company’s global address book. Google says it works just as easily across Google Docs and Google Sites.

Before this support was rolled out, Google says they and their resellers had to use workarounds, including setting up the other domains as aliases under the primary or simply setting up another Google Apps account for each domain. Obviously, neither is necessary any longer.

Multi-domain support is available now to Google Apps Premier and Education users at no additional charge, just like most other Google Apps updates. Call it one more step towards Google Apps reaching its full potential as an enterprise solution.

I think this solves the issue also of having to abandon current licenses and purchase a new account to get your primary domain changed…

Now if they would only tell us when iOS 4 and Google Sync will be fixed!!

Andy: I know Google continues to face quite a few challenges within the MSP community. But overall, I’m impressed that Google’s channel team continues to spend time listening to MSPs at conferences. Curious to see if Microsoft’s new channel chief uses similar tactics in the SaaS market…

Update: Google Sync finally working with iPhone 4 and iOS 4 on iPhone 3G!

I have a mixed bag of feelings on how much control an MSP has over a client’s data. We like that Microsoft requires a direct purchase as we would prefer the client have final control over their data. However, if I ran a MSP today though I would certainly favor Google’s model!

I am interested to see what Roskill will do for the channel. I have seen a lot of Lenovo Server proposals lately from MSP’s so I am assuming their MSP-centric strategy is working. Seems to be a great product, too…
