Eucalyptus, Puppet Labs Partner for Private Cloud Management
Eucalyptus Systems develops open source software that turns existing IT infrastructure into private clouds. Puppet Labs provides open source systems management software. And now the two companies are hoping that by partnering up for the Eucalyptus-Puppet Integration Kit, they’re offering cloud service providers an easier way to deploy, provision and manage those private clouds.
True to the open source philosophy behind Eucalyptus and Puppet Labs, the integration kit is completely free, according to the press release. It’s compatible with both the community and enterprise editions of the Puppet management suite as well as the Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition private cloud platform, and is designed to make it easier for administrators to control their clouds.
Puppet Labs, which usually specializes in providing “seamless” IT infrastructure across various resources, isn’t necessarily known for its cloud play, but it’s not too far a stretch. Eucalyptus isn’t the first IaaS cloud platform Puppet Labs has partnered with – the company is one of the inaugural technology partners for Nimbula Director.
Under CEO Marten Mickos, Eucalyptus Systems, which also provides the technology backbone for the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, has given a lot of lip service to getting aggressive with new offering-expanding partnerships. It seems like Eucalyptus is really trying to enhance its play for its service provider partners, especially as it faces the spectre of competition from OpenStack.
But does the Eucalyptus-Puppet Integration Kit mean more profits for cloud pros? Stay tuned for more clues.
