ESET Upgrades Security Features, Adds Training

ESET, the software security and anti-malware provider, unveiled version 7 of its flagship products, NOD32 Antivirus and Smart Security, this week. For the security ecosystem, the upgrade brings particular innovation in the areas of social media, antit-heft features for hardware and—perhaps most useful of all—online training modules to help teach users how to be secure in their computing lives.

The updates build upon the feature base of earlier ESET products, but incorporate new functionality designed to meet the latest threats. Of particular note are:

  • An Advanced Memory Scanner with improved capability to detect malware living in memory. That type of security strategy could become especially important as in-memory computing grows in popularity as a means of overcoming the processing limitations imposed by traditional disks.

  • A new Social Media Scanner feature that extends scanning ability to Twitter (the tool previously supported only Facebook) and is better equipped to detect malware hosted within social media. The scanner might not protect you from oversharing friends who post too much information, but it can help to keep your computer from becoming compromised.

  • Stronger antitheft features that allow users to trace the geographical location, through ESET's website, of a laptop reported missing.

  • Cybersecurity training modules available to ESET customers through the company's website.

That last update is especially significant. Arguably, education in best practices can do more than even the most sophisticated software to protect users' privacy and data, and ESET appears eager to become active in the education realm with its latest product release. That's likely to be welcome news for many enterprise technology officers, who will be more than happy to outsource the education of their users.

Version 7 of ESET NOD32 Antivirus and ESET Smart Security are officially available as of Oct. 16 and support all current Microsoft (MSFT) operating systems. (ESET offers security tools for other operating systems, including Linux, as well, but these are distinct from the flagship products for Windows.)
