Dot Hill Releases Apple-Friendly AssuredSAN Solution

Assured sanStorage, storage, storage. Seems like everywhere The VAR Guy looks there’s another storage offering hitting the market. The latest buzz on the platter-spinning scene is from Dot Hill, which is targeting the creative and educational market with its new AssuredSAN + ATTO 8Gb Fibre Channel HBA combination. Here’s the scoop:

Dot Hill’s latest launch of AssuredSAN post-production solutions are slated to debut in Las Vegas at the NAB digital media entertainment show, since Dot Hill is specifically targeting Apple-centric post-production users who do heavy video editing. Dot Hill’s technology, featuring ATTO’s Celerity Fibre channel host bus adapters (HBAs), is beefy enough to satisfy the needs of Final Cut Pro editors, or even Autodesk Smoke users, according to the company. The VAR Guy knows files created in these “creative-focused” programs can grow fatter than Jabba the Hut at an all-you-can-eat buffet, so Dot Hill has some big expectations to fill.

What’s more, Dot Hill boasts its solution has been 100 percent fully tested and certified to work with Apple workstations running Mac OS X and Apple’s Xsan file system. The VAR Guy sees that as a plus — even after the death of Xserve there’s still clear demand for Xsan support.

Dot Hill has not yet announced pricing, so VARs may want to hold off on developing a sales strategy for the Apple-friendly AssuredSAN solution until they know what the damage is. Meanwhile, The VAR Guy sees Dot Hill’s technology as a unique offering for the creative crowd, which may be okay with shelling out whatever’s necessary to ensure their files are safe.
