Continuous delivery solutions provider CloudBees today announced it will discontinue its RUN@cloud platform-as-a-service (PaaS) to focus exclusively on the Jenkins open source server market and ecosystem.

CloudBees also said it will help existing RUN@cloud customers migrate their applications to other platforms.

“In the last two years, a growing number of customers have pursued an extensive continuous delivery strategy, and Jenkins has moved from a developer-centric tool to a company-wide continuous delivery hub, orchestrating many of the key company IT assets,” CloudBees CEO Sacha Labourey told Talkin’ Cloud. “For CloudBees, this shift has translated into a massive growth of our Jenkins Enterprise by CloudBees business and has forced us to reflect on how we see our future.”

Jenkins is an extendable open source continuous integration server with over 85,000 active installations in use globally.

CloudBees noted active Jenkins installations increased by 160 percent in calendar year 2013 and by more than 300 percent in the three years that ended Dec. 31, 2013, and the company’s Jenkins business continues to grow accordingly.

“Our Jenkins business is experiencing dramatic growth, and we are refocusing our company to take advantage of this great opportunity,” Labourey said in a prepared statement. “We are committed to helping our customers develop and deliver software to meet the needs of their business by leveraging the power of Jenkins. Jenkins has become the hub of continuous delivery, and we are positioned to capture a dominant share of the growing continuous delivery market.”

CloudBees has set a deadline for users to transition off of RUN@cloud by the end of the year and is offering transition assistance to customers through Oct. 31.

CloudBees partners with Pivotal

CloudBees also has partnered with open source software company Pivotal to develop enterprise-grade continuous integration and delivery solutions for the Pivotal CF PaaS based on Cloud Foundry.

The partnership offers Pivotal customers access to enterprise-grade continuous integration and continuous delivery software and could help them accelerate the adoption of agile development and deployment practices, according to CloudBees.

“Enterprises have widely adopted continuous integration and continuous delivery as a best practice, with Jenkins Enterprise as the keystone,” Labourey said in a prepared statement. “This distribution and go-to-market partnership has real promise, as Pivotal CF is also being adopted by large businesses. Pivotal, CloudBees and our enterprise customers all share an affinity for delivering and deploying software with speed and at scale.”

The Jenkins Enterprise by CloudBees solution will be available as an add-on service for Pivotal CF later this year.
