Case Study: Komodo, Peak Help DirectBuy Save $2.5M in CapEx

The Client. DirectBuy is a nationwide, members-only furniture showroom headquartered in Indiana. The 43-year-old company represents more than 700 manufacturers, 1 million products and 100 franchise locations.

The Problem. DirectBuy wanted to give its franchise owners more control over their technology. To do that, it needed to migrate from a traditional colocation environment and into the cloud. It also had to adhere to a tight implementation timeline of 60 days.

The Solution. DirectBuy turned to Komodo Cloud LLC, a born-in-the-cloud company that serves enterprises throughout the United States. Komodo then contracted with IaaS and cloud provider Peak.

The Result. In less than six months, DirectBuy avoided $2.5 million in capital expenditures. The company also saw a 100 percent reduction in its infrastructure-related problem tickets. Further, Komodo met the two-month deadline. That’s because, by using Peak’s Layer 2 dedicated network connections, Komodo was able to keep DirectBuy on its existing network during the deployment to the cloud so there was no interruption. Then, Komodo switched DirectBuy over to the new environment.

“Because we were in lock step with the Peak team, from management to migration, we were able to extend a secure, fast pathway to DirectBuy to migrate its applications and IT environment to the cloud – vastly accelerating a process that would normally take six months,” said Eric Hughes, CEO of Komodo Cloud.

Here are the other benefits DirectBuy saw by placing its production workload with Komodo Cloud and Peak:

  • A three- to five-fold increase in website responsiveness and performance

  • Establishment of best practices to use across each department

  • 40 percent reduction in IT operating expenses

  • 80 percent reduction in time to market

  • Achievement of PCI compliance

  • Provisioning of disaster recovery capabilities across two regions

“Thanks to Komodo Cloud and their strong relationship with Peak, we experienced a seamless and quick migration to the cloud, which enabled DirectBuy to deliver new service offerings, new memberships, and increase our agility and flexibility at all levels throughout the company,” said Armin Roesler, CIO of DirectBuy.
