CA Technologies Cloud Strategy: Gaining Momentum?

CA Technologies has spent the past few years acquiring cloud software and managed services software companies. At the same time, CA Technologies has overhauled many of its existing products to offer service provider licensing to cloud services providers (CSPs) and MSPs. The results look promising, based on anecdotal evidence and recent research from International Data Corp. (IDC).

The IDC report gives CA Technologies strong marks in the network and infrastructure management market across physical and virtual systems. Read between the lines and IDC seems to be pointing to such CA Technologies acquisitions as AppLogic and Nimsoft.

Meanwhile, CA Technologies is starting to connect the dots between its traditional software lines and its newer cloud acquisitions. One prime example: This week Talkin’ Cloud reported that ScaleMatrix, a cloud and managed services provider, will offer CA ARCserve — the backup and recovery platform — in its AppLogic-based cloud.

Other recent developments in CA’s world, according to a statement from the company, include:

  • GreenPages Technology Solutions, a virtualization consulting and integration firm, became the first American integration partner for the new CA Private Cloud Accelerator for Vblock Platforms.

  • AFORE Solutions, Inc., a cloud security and management solutions provider, joined the Cloud Commons ecosystem and will offer its CloudLink security solutions and professional services through the Cloud Commons Marketplace.

  • NEC decided to offer a new cloud security service that uses CA Technologies cloud-based authentication expertise.

  • CA Technolgies announced CA Private Cloud Accelerator for Vblock Platforms, a service that provides Business Service Innovation by allowing IT to provide rapid and secure delivery of cloud infrastructure and critical IT and business services.

  • UK-based MSP Vnetrix announced it has decreased the launch time for hosted cloud services using CA’s AppLogic software. The company helps global customers reduce time-to-market for new business services.

  • Novatrend, an MSP in Switzerland, chose CA AppLogic platform to launch a new suite of cloud services.

  • IT infrastructure firm VCE certified 12 CA Tech software products to run on Vblock Infrastructure Platforms, allowing customers to quickly automate their cloud operations and reduce costs.

  • In December 2012, IDC named CA Technologies one of the top two market share leaders (now they are #1) in the global cloud systems management software market in their report, Worldwide Cloud Systems Management Software 2011-2015 Forecast Update and 2010 Vendor Shares.

  • And in November 2012, CA Technologies launched its Cloud Commons marketplace and developer studio at CA World in Las Vegas

Side note: Of course, we realize CA Technologies faces massive competition on multiple fronts. While several dozen cloud services providers now run CA AppLogic, thousands of rival cloud services providers continue down better-known paths involving VMware, OpenStack, Microsoft and other cloud platforms.

That said, we do think CA Technologies is making progress with the MSP and CSP communities.
