Big Switch Becomes Mirantis Technology Partner
Big Switch Networks and Mirantis are working together to bring software-defined networking (SDN) and open networking hardware to OpenStack.
The companies this week announced they will deliver a joint solution that includes the Mirantis OpenStack Distribution and Fuel installer and Big Switch’s Big Cloud Fabric (BCF).
“Mirantis and Big Switch strip away complexity and increase scalability and agility through the cloud,” Mirantis Chief Marketing Officer Boris Renski said in a prepared statement. “Mirantis makes OpenStack reliable and easier to use, while Big Switch unlocks the power of SDN in making data centers scalable.”
The Big Switch-Mirantis partnership is designed to provide cloud infrastructure to enterprise and service provider data centers worldwide.
Big Switch pointed out the Mirantis Fuel installer is flexible and features a simple interface to help accelerate OpenStack deployments, while the BCF Controller provides “tremendous application agility and rapid change management.”

“All of us in the OpenStack community are keenly aware that the lack of an easy-to-use, production-grade SDN solution has been an issue,” Big Switch co-founder Kyle Forster added. “This partnership — with the certifications, installers, documentation — is addressing this issue while preserving choices for hardware and software in the networking stack.”
Why are Big Switch and Mirantis working together?
Forster told Talkin’ Cloud that he believes the Big Switch-Mirantis partnership fills a gap in the OpenStack landscape.
Big Switch noted both companies’ technologies together accelerate OpenStack deployments on SDN-based cloud fabrics that are built with commodity bare metal switches and ensure customers “can quickly deploy OpenStack clouds that are scalable, resilient, operationally simple and highly cost-optimized.”
“We’ve found that OpenStack clouds, SDN software and open networking hardware have a natural affinity in the market,” Forster said. “These projects tend to be driven by thought leaders who are looking for modern approaches to data center design and interested in taking some of the technologies found in hyperscale data centers and replicating them in-house. Mirantis, as an OpenStack leader, was a natural partner for us.”
