Behind the Scenes of Dropbox’s Early Days

Dropbox's story starts like many other Silicon Valley startups – mind you, not in a garage or a basement, but an apartment overlooking the bay where its founders lived and worked.

If you are curious about Dropbox's beginnings, check out an interview on The Macro blog with Aston Motes, Dropbox’s first employee.

Aside from sharing some anecdotes about its first demo day pitch, odd working hours, and all the technology it cobbled together to deliver its first version, the interview touches on real insecurities entrepreneurs face along with other challenges. By focusing on user experience, Dropbox has managed to become one of the biggest cloud storage companies today.

“There were a lot of companies we were competing against in backup and file sharing. Ultimately, I think what differentiated Dropbox was user experience and really never screwing up, like deleting a file or anything like that. And if you were using Dropbox you could be pretty certain that whatever you were doing, the interaction was going to be easy. So that was a super big focus for me,” Motes says.
