Of all the potential regions in Europe, why Germany? It’s a simple case of expanding capabilities for some existing large customers, including Burda Media, SAP, Software AG and Talanx. According to Amazon, all four of those customers have been expanding their use of Amazon Web Services and continue to do so with the opening of the EU (Frankfurt) region.
“Our European business continues to grow dramatically,” said Andy Jassy, senior vice president of Amazon Web Services, in a prepared statement. “By opening a second European region, and situating it in Germany, we’re enabling German customers to move more workloads to AWS, allowing European customers to architect across multiple EU regions, and better balancing our substantial European growth.”
The new region consists of two Amazon Availability Zones (translation: data center locations) at launch. To kick things off, Amazon has launched most of its infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) cloud services into Frankfurt.
The EU (Frankfurt) region is being supported by account managers, solutions architects, technical support engineers and other functions.
There are some beliefs that American legal precedence has been placing roadblocks in front of cloud services providers looking to expand overseas, but Amazon Web Services doesn’t seem deterred and is, in fact, growing its business in various geographies around the world. Others are sure to follow.
