Amazon EC2 Adds Migration For VMware vCenter
Amazon Web Services wants to make it easier to move virtual machines from a private cloud to the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). The effort involves the so-called Amazon EC2 VM Import Connector vApp for VMware vCenter. It’s a virtual appliance that allows cloud integrators and IT managers to import pre-existing virtual machines into Amazon’s cloud.
According to the official Amazon blog entry announcing the VM Import Connector, it’s as easy for Amazon EC2 customers as selecting the virtual machine in the “familiar” VMware vSphere Client GUI, specifying the AWS Region and Availability Zone, operating system, instance size, and VPC details. Once all that basic stuff is put in, the instance is deployed in EC2.
While on the subject on VMware, this might be a good chance to refer TalkinCloud readers to a pair of virtualization stories that ran on The VAR Guy, our sister site, this week: VMware launched the vCenter Operations cloud management solution, aimed at automating IT-as-a-service. And the Apple iPad is the latest VMware View client.
