VMworld 2012: Dell Preps Desktop Virtualization Competency
Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) at VMworld 2012 is expected to discuss a Desktop Virtualization Competency for channel partners, including Wyse Technology partners, according to Bob Skelley, executive director, global certified partner program and channel at Dell. Dell acquired Wyse earlier this year. The PC giant over time will also discuss desktop virtualization for Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix Systems partners. Here’s Dell’s strategy.
“For those who have strong desktop virtualization expertise, this is a new area to grow and expand with Dell. It also gives those partners some exposure to our client business and Wyse portfolio,” said Skelley. “It also gives Wyse partners a path where they can live and thrive within PartnerDirect,” which is Dell’s all-encompassing partner program.
Skelley said Dell is going to keep things really simple:
- Wyse partners will find the competency straightforward and easy to understand, while it will also help partners gain some expertise around solutions.
- Dell will also recognize training investments partners have already made. For instance, established desktop virtualization partners that already work with Citrix Systems, Microsoft and VMware will be credited with those existing investments.
- Longer term, Dell will explore how Quest Software — another pending Dell acquisition — potentially fits into this virtualization strategy as well. However, it’s premature for Dell to go down that path since the Quest acquisition has yet to close.
Desktop virtualization will surely be a key theme at VMworld. The VAR Guy will begin blogging live from the conference on Aug. 26. Stay tuned.
