CompTIA announced the launch of new exams for the CompTIA Linux + Powered by LPI certification to help junior-level Linux administrators improve their technical competencies.
The new exams include the most recent content on changes in core technologies and processes used by Linux administrators, such as developments in IPv6 and the use of Linux in cloud-based environments. The exams will also focus on providing administrators with additional security and troubleshooting skills, according to the announcement.
The exams were developed by CompTIA and the Linux Professional Institute, a vendor-neutral Linux certification organization. All professionals earning certification through the exams can apply to be recognized as both LPIC1 certified and SUSE Certified Linux Administrators. CompTIA has already certified more than 22,000 IT professionals through the program, according to the press release.
CompTIA said its exams will help administrators qualify for the increased demand for skilled Linux professionals in the IT industry. The certification is also expected to serve as a “pivot point” for IT professionals looking to migrate to higher level jobs.
“Linux is now embedded into IT; it’s part of the toolkit,” said James Stanger, senior director of product management at CompTIA, in a statement. “Most ‘hot jobs’ in today’s IT workforce directly involve or are closely related to Linux.”
IT professionals are required to pass two exams to become CompTIA Linux+ certified. CompTIA recommends that all candidates already be CompTIA A+ and Network+ certified before taking the exams, in addition to having at least 12 months of hands-on Linux administration experience. Complete exam details are available on CompTIA’s website, with preparation materials expected to be released in the coming weeks from several CompTIA partners.
Last month, CompTIA announced it had expanded its CertMaster online certification portfolio with the addition of a new CompTIA Network+ exam to help IT pros develop skills in vital areas including software-defined networking, cloud and virtualization; physical and virtual network segmentation, wireless and mobile device management.
