A recent survey conducted by PHP framework provider Zend Technologies finds that developers are quickly moving into the cloud, with a solid 60 percent of the 3,335 respondents saying that the public cloud will play a role in their projects.

Of course, even asking developers about the cloud reflects Zend’s own interests: it operates the recently launched PHPcloud.com, “where developers are actively building apps for the cloud, in the cloud, in the Zend Developer Cloud sandbox,” in Zend’s own words.

That was the lion’s share of cloud-related survey results. But some other interesting data points in the survey include the fact that more than half of respondents say demand for PHP skills are on the rise in 2012; 66 percent of developers will be working on mobile projects; and demand for Big Data solutions is growing in enterprises with more than 100 seats.

I’m not surprised the cloud is gaining in popularity, given the sheer number of studies that cross my desk every day suggesting exactly that, but it’s good to see that developers are moving along with the vendors.
