Will MSPs Invest in Connected Vehicle Management?
Connected vehicle management (CVM) may seem like an alien term to managed services providers (MSPs) today, but CVM may become even more common than mobile device management (MDM) in the years to come.
First, what is CVM? And why should connected vehicles spark interest among MSPs? Before we define CVM, we must first agree on a definition for a "connected vehicle."
According to the International Data Corp. (IDC), these are "vehicles [that] wirelessly communicate with each other, the road infrastructure, the Internet and smart mobile devices." This back and forth communication is what we call "connected vehicle technology," while the management of this technology is CVM.
TruMethods CEO and owner Gary Pica spoke with MSPmentor on this topic and agreed that there is a possible opportunity for MSPs in this market.
"I think this market will develop for MSPs in the same way that MDM has begun to become part of the normal infrastructure that MSPs manage," he said.
Pica did, however, note possible obstacles for MSPs leveraging this market, including a large one: safety, a negative that may send MSPs running.
To understand the negative impact of connected vehicles, IDC Manufacturing Insights launched a connected vehicle survey to "gauge consumer preferences in vehicle connectivity, safety and privacy, and shed light on gaps in current development effort."
IDC Manufacturing Insights Connected Vehicle Strategies Program Manager Shelia Brennan suggested in a prepared statement that driving is now considered time-consuming.
"But the reality is, future consumers view driving as a distraction to their connected life, and most millennials are more interested in consumer electronics than purchasing cars," she said.
If this market continues to grow, MSPs may need to start seriously considering it as a possibility while also remaining cautious. This market will more than likely bring additional regulations with it, too, which can cause more of a strain. MSPs will be the judges of whether this market is worth it or not.
