VMware’s SpringSource Divison Acquires GemStone
SpringSource, a VMware division that specializes in web and customer application monitoring, continues to expand its technology portfolio. Specifically, SpringSource is set to buy GemStone Systems, a data management technology company. Eventually, GemStone’s software will integrate with SpringSource’s offerings. Here are some details.
First, a little background: SpringSource and VMware are striving to provide the infrastructure necessary for “emerging cloud-centric applications, with built-in availability, scalability, security and performance guarantees.” Looking ahead, SpringSource says it “will integrate GemStone’s high performance data management technologies into its suite of application infrastructure that enables the development, deployment and management of cloud-centric applications.”
The bigger question: Is VMware evolving beyond virtualization into a systems, applications, cloud and data center management company? It sure looks like it. As you may recall, VMware in April 2010 acquired Rabbit Technologies Ltd. As part of that move, Rabbit’s open source messaging system will be integrated with SpringSource. And we hear VMware may be considering additional acquisitions to bolster the SpringSource vision.
