VMware Eyes Federal Space with vCloud Government

VMware (VMW) has its eye on the U.S. federal government space. The company known for its virtualization technologies announced the upcoming launch of VMware vCloud Government Service for the U.S. public sector. VMware is working with cloud operator Carpathia to bring the service to market.

But don't expect it to happen immediately. VMware is not on the list of authorized FedRAMP Authority to Operate vendors and partners. If all goes well, it soon will be, but don't expect that to happen until the second half of 2014. But VMware is putting the wheels in motion and has announced its bid to secure FedRAMP for its enterprise hybrid cloud service offering that is currently in development.

VMware vCloud Government Service is based on VMware vSphere, which the company noted is already in wide use among federal government customers.

"VMware has helped federal agencies optimize and manage their data center infrastructure for more than 14 years, and helping them to now use that infrastructure in the cloud is a natural extension of our core business," said Lynn Martin, vice president of Public Sector at VMware, in a prepared statement. "More importantly, because so many federal agencies are already using VMware solutions, it's a natural evolution of what they are already doing. VMware is committed to empowering these agencies to use the cloud to meet their line of business and mission requirements rapidly, easily and confidently."

As with the FedRAMP status, VMware expects the new hybrid cloud offering for the U.S. federal government to be ready during the second half of 2014. VMware will work with Carpathia's team to take advantage of its experience in delivering compliant solutions for government agencies.
