Updated: Dell Is Mystery Quest Software Bidder (Really?)
Dell is the mystery bidder for Quest Software, according to published reports this evening. It’s too early to say if Dell will actually acquire Quest, which makes virtualization, IT administration and managed services software. But this is one of the wildest on-again, off-again, on-again M&A stories in recent history.
Reuters reported this evening that Dell has bid $2.15 billion for Quest Software — which is slightly more than Insight Venture Partners previously bid for Quest. Insight has three days to potentially counter Dell’s offer.
For managed services providers, Quest Software’s future ownership is particularly intriguing. Quest Software offers PacketTrap MSP (remote monitoring and management, or RMM, software) and PacketTrap PSA (professional services automation software for MSP business management.
Still, I don’t think PacketTrap is really on Dell’s radar. Rather, Dell is likely far more interested in Quest Software’s virtualization, IT management and software migration expertise. Quest has repeatedly positioned itself as one of the world’s leading providers of Office 365 migration services.
