‘Tis the Season to be Wary: Holiday Mobile Device Threats
Mobile security breaches could really put a damper on your mobile device management (MDM) strategy for your clients, however, you may be able to protect them by passing along some security tips in your role as trusted advisor. With the holidays flying toward us, clients may be carelessly exposing themselves to security threats through their mobile devices. We've put together three mobile security threats to educate your students or your clients — without sounding like a Scrooge.
So in the spirit of the holiday season, why not send a friendly email to your clients with the following tips that could help keep them, their user devices and their company data safe this year:
Beware of QR codes — With mobile device use on the rise, QR codes are gold to marketers. On the other hand, QR codes are a security concern for many managed services providers (MSPs). Provide your clients with a list of safe ways to use QR codes, but also include strategies to recognize a malicious QR code.
Don't break out of jail — Your clients may think that “jailbreaking” their Apple device is the cool thing to do, but as you know it creates an endless vulnerability. Users become susceptible to security attacks because of the ability to download apps that have not been put through Apple's vetting processes to ensure virus-free apps. “Rooting,” the term used for removing limitations on Android devices, is a concern for the same reasoning.
Don't go for the bait — Always advise against clicking unknown links. An infected mobile device is not the only thing to worry about here. If one person clicks on the wrong link an infection can spread to the user's contact list as well. Contacts without knowledge of this will become vulnerability to this spreading attack. Provide your clients with ways to recognize potential attacks, and make it easy for them to share through their social media accounts.
