SunGard Cloud Expands to Canada

SunGard Availability Services is expanding its Enterprise Cloud Services, IaaS and Recover2Cloud offerings to Canadian soil with the opening of its first data center (or “centre,” I guess) in the Great White North.

The US got access to SunGard’s cloud services around this time in 2011, but now Canadian businesses will get access via a new facility in Mississauga, Ontario, built on Vblock cloud technology from EMC, VMware and Cisco, according to the press release.

Interestingly, SunGard Vice President of Product Management Rob Walters says in a prepared statement that this Canadian launch is in response to increasing demand for cloud services:

“We’ve been seeing a marked increase in demand for services from our Canadian customers. By adding cloud to our existing colocation, managed hosting and disaster recovery services available in our Canadian data centres, organizations can take a hybrid approach to their cloud deployments.  They can now blend physical, virtual and cloud models in their overall production and recovery environments.”

Now, an infrastructure-as-a-service offering isn’t unique in the cloud services market these days. And neither is Recover2Cloud for Vaulting, SunGard’s online storehouse for physical and virtual environment backups and quick recovery. But SunGard does offer its cloud services through the channel, and expanding into the oft-overlooked Canadian services market could be the edge it needs.
