Small Business Virus Woes Ripe for Managed Services Cure
If you are an MSP specializing in either providing services to small-to-mid-sized businesses (SMBs) and/or providing security services, you should pay attention to the results of a recent survey from GFI Software suggesting that viruses and malware are creating problems that SMB IT managers cannot handle on their own.
The survey of 200 IT decision makers in U.S. organizations ranging from five to 50 employees reveals that for a large percentage of SMBs, computer viruses and malware are creating difficulties of near plague-like proportions. For instance, results show that 27 percent of SMB IT admins say they are not running the same antivirus solution with the same license renewal date on all company PCs, and 33 percent lack a centrally managed antivirus solution.
Furthermore, nearly half (48 percent) of SMB IT admins report that they lack the capability to see which PCs or servers on their network are about to fail. This percentage increases to 55 percent or more in organizations with fewer than 25 employees. And of most interest to MSPs, nearly eight in 10 (78 percent) of SMB respondents say they would be interested in a Web-based service that enables them to manage antivirus protection on company PCs.
MSPs Provide Benefits beyond Increased Security
Naturally, MSPs can provide SMBs that lack the in-house expertise and resources to effectively guard and monitor their systems against viruses, malware and other unwelcome intrusions the benefit of greatly increased security. But MSPs tailoring a managed security services sales pitch for SMB clients should investigate other survey findings to identify additional benefits managed security services can offer.
One big extra managed security services offer resource-strapped SMBs is the advantage of time. According to survey respondents, if they no longer had to spend time manually managing antivirus software and identifying and repairing server and workstation failures, the most important IT tasks they would pursue would include backing up data, files and systems; cleaning up database files, disks and servers; upgrading programs, software and hardware; developing, designing and maintaining company websites; and converting to cloud-based services.
And survey results also show virus concerns are inhibiting SMB cloud conversion efforts. About one-quarter of SMB respondents (24 percent) say cloud security is a top concern when moving to cloud applications. Considering the long-term cost savings and efficiencies cloud applications can create, SMBs with security concerns are losing out on a potentially huge competitive advantage – one MSPs can help them obtain.
