It’s starting to look like OpenStack, the open source cloud operating system project founded by Rackspace Hosting and NASA, may well be able to achieve its mission thanks to all the support the cloud community has been showing. And now you can add rPath to list of boosters, as the self-described “service factory for on-demand IT” announces its X6 cloud automation platform now supports OpenStack and VMware vCloud Director.According to the press release, the rPath X6 platform itself is designed to help cloud service providers and administrators to visually construct systems, generate images, and implement system updates, delivering speed and efficiency boosts when it comes to deploying and managing IT infrastructure.
OpenStack, as loyal TalkinCloud readers will know, has over 50 partners, including Dell and Equinix. And VMware vCloud Director is a tool designed to get private and public clouds up and running in no time. In both cases, rPath’s automation technology is a potentially valuable addition to the platform.
It’s a natural fit, too — as part of the NRE Alliance, consisting of recent Cisco acquisition newScale, rPath, and Eucalyptus Systems — the company gained experience into participating in an open source complete cloud offering.
Still, it’s important to note that OpenStack is a work in progress. The project has object storage and compute components. Object Storage is a bit more mature, and compute isn’t really ready for widespread commercial deployment just yet.
