How to Monitor Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV)

red hat small business

Nimsoft Monitor can now manage Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) environments. At first glance this is a small piece of news. But I think it’s very significant, especially as managed services providers (MSPs) seek cost-effective options to virtualize and manage customer environments and cloud services data centers.

Nimsoft is the managed services software arm of CA Technologies. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, meanwhile, is based on KVM (kernel-based virtual machine) — an open source hypervisor. Red Hat (NYSE: RHT) has predicted RHEV will eventually leapfrog VMware, much in the way that Linux disrupted the Unix market.

So far, VMware remains the king of virtualization but alternatives like Microsoft Hyber-V, Citrix and RHEV have found their niches. In the past year, RHEV has also gained ground with channel partners that already offer Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and JBoss middleware.

Nimsoft is not playing favorite in the virtualization market. The company is hypervisor-agnostic. But RHEV support is a vote of confidence that could prompt Nimsoft MSPs to work more closely with Red Hat. In a prepared statement, Nimsoft said it now supports:

  • Auto-discovery of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization hypervisors.

  • Granular, correlated views of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and the underlying physical systems.

  • Real-time performance and availability of data.

  • Proactive alerts based on customer-defined thresholds.

  • Automation of common RHEV configuration and data collection tasks.

Nimsoft will demonstrate the RHEV support at Red Hat Summit/JBoss World (June 27-28, Boston).
