GFI Spin-Off Update: No Downside for Managed Services Providers

GFI Software‘s surprise decision to spin off its security business (now called ThreatTrack) immediately raised a big question mark in the managed services market. Specifically, would GFI Max (the company’s MSP-focused software unit) still have access to ThreatTrack’s security technology? MSPmentor asked GFI Max General Manager Alistair Forbes for his take on the situation. And Forbes delivered a timely answer.

Forbes offered this perspective:

“The spin-out is a decision designed to allow ThreatTrack to move into the enterprise market, developing it’s high end malware detection and prevention solutions and addressing the larger private and public customer base that already uses the solutions that we have offered to date.”

So what’s the upshot for MSPs running GFI Max’s software? Alistair offered this vote of confidence:

“GFI retains its strong focus on SMB customers and within that its commitment to MSPs as the class of organisations that many SMB customers turn turn to manage their IT needs. ThreatTrack Security will continue to develop and maintain the VIPRE endpoint protection technology that is used within GFI MAX and we have an agreement in place that will ensure that we continue to get access to the enhancements that are made to the VIPRE technology. It is a core part of the ThreatTrack strategy to use the endpoint technology as part of its full security offering so our interests are aligned in looking to continue to use that to underpin both of our businesses.”

Translation: ThreatTrack sounds like it’s contractually obligated to support the GFI Max partner network with continued security software integrations — good news for MSPs, indeed.
