Fujitsu Brings Global Cloud Platform IaaS to North America

Can the North American cloud industry handle another IaaS player? Fujitsu plans to roll out its Global Cloud Platform in North America May 31, 2011, after about a year of successful operations in Japan, Australia, Singapore and the United Kingdom. The value proposition? On top of the usual low TCO and high ROI, Fujitsu claims it provides enterprise-grade security, an open standards-based platform and the knowledge that its data centers are ecologically friendly.

The Fujitsu Global Cloud Platform will be available as a free beta from May 31 to Aug. 31, 2011, and then come Sept. 1 Fujitsu plans to officially launch cloud compute, storage and network resources on a pay-per-use model the official press release assures will be “competitive.” It will even host a Windows Azure cloud for you.

While Fujitsu America’s VP of Cloud Portfolio Marketing Jody Little said the company not making a specific channel play with the Global Cloud Platform at this time, cloud service providers could still reap the benefits. In addition to its security, eco-friendliness and API openness, Little noted Fujitsu’s IaaS offering is, in fact, global – which means large enterprises can keep data in local facilities but maintain a consistent cloud platform.

Tokyo-based Fujitsu’s no IT Johnny-come-lately – the company is the third-largest service provider in the world (IBM is No. 1). But when Fujitsu Global Cloud Platform was unveiled back in August 2010, I noted that the IaaS market was getting crowded. And that’s only gotten more true over the last 10 months.
