Boundary, a month-old SAAS monitoring service provider, has hired Gary Read as its CEO. Read is the former CEO of Nimsoft, a cloud-based networking monitoring provider that CA Technologies acquired in 2010. Here’s the scoop.

In his personal blog, Read offered some hints about his new career a few days ago. Read wrote:

“Starting the new job tomorrow; really looking forward to it although I must admit I almost feel like I’ve been working at it for a week already. I believe that we will put out a formal release on Wednesday; so I’ll have to keep it quiet until then.

I have my first customer meeting on Wednesday morning – not that I’m going to be doing much talking as I don’t know enough yet.

Jumping back in….early stage….game changing technology….great people….”

Playing an Encore?

Boundary is hoping Read still has the magic touch in the monitoring market. Read led Nimsoft to become a reported $35 million (or so) company before CA Technologies acquired Nimsoft for a cool $350 million.

In the fiercely competitive monitoring market, Read avoided saturated markets and positioned Nimsoft for mid-size MSPs and enterprise deployments. He also quietly extended Nimsoft from an on-premise solution into a cloud service around the time of the CA deal.

“We’re ecstatic that Gary has decided to join Boundary,” Lightspeed Venture Partner Managing Director John Vrionis said a prepared statement. “His track record learning and growing Nimsoft makes him the perfect match for Boundary and its SaaS real-time monitoring service.”

Read will also become one of three members of Boundary’s board of directors. Vrionis will join Read on the Boundary board, along with Boundary Founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Cliff Moon, who will lead the design, development and operation of Boundary’s signature, real-time monitoring service.

Boundary’s Short History

Read’s appointment as CEO comes just two months after Boundary launched the public beta version of its IT monitoring solution. So why did Read decide to join Boundary? “IT Management needs to be significantly improved,” said Read in a prepared statement in which he referred to existing solutions as being too static and too complex for cloud-based infrastructures. “I believe Boundary is ideally positioned to lead this revolution and take customers into a truly new generation of management.”

Boundary’s platform is specifically designed to monitor data traffic flow in Amazon EC2 and public and private cloud environments. It appears well-positioned to do so, starting at the top. Boundary Founder and CEO Ben Black worked on network infrastructure and security solutions for Amazon before founding Boundary with Moon. The company plans to make its monitoring solution generally available during the first half of 2012.
