Data protection is key for businesses of all sizes, and now, Datto is empowering companies to protect their mission-critical data no matter where it lives.

The data backup and disaster recovery (BDR) software company today announced it has acquired Backupify, which provides cloud-to-cloud BDR solutions for software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“I am incredibly proud to welcome Backupify into the Datto family. This acquisition of the market leader in SaaS backup is an important step in our vision to protect business data no matter where it lives,” Datto CEO Austin McChord wrote in a blog post. “Adding Backupify’s technology is an important step in building a true total data protection platform.”

Datto noted it plans to leverage both Datto and Backupify technologies to offer “a united force for comprehensive on-premise and cloud-based backup, the first Total Data Protection Platform,” to managed service providers (MSPs) and their customers.

This platform will provide businesses with instant recovery and data protection, Datto said, and extend the Datto 24/7/365 customer service model.

“The acquisition of Backupify only makes Datto’s innovative technology architecture and cloud-based approach all the more powerful,” Datto board member Steve Herrod said in a prepared statement.

A Datto spokesperson told MSPmentor that the addition of Backupify also gives MSPs new recurring revenue opportunities and enables service providers to streamline their backup, recovery and business continuity solutions portfolio with one vendor.

Backupify is the largest automated data protection solution and supports several popular online services, including:

  • Facebook

  • Google Apps

  • Salesforce

  • Smartsheet

  • Twitter

Datto said the Backupify product will become a product line under the Datto umbrella, “Datto Backupify,” and Backupify customers will transition to a channel-only model over time.

McChord added that he believes the Backupify acquisition will play an important role in delivering a Total Data Protection Platform that fulfills businesses’ BDR needs.

“Backupify provides must-have solutions for companies entrusting their data to SaaS applications, and our team will help complete the vision of creating a Total Data Protection Platform that extends across a company’s entire digital ecosystem, as well as expand to new global markets, including Europe, Asia and Latin America,” he said.
