COMPTEL: Accedian Adds Service Mapping to Ethernet Platform

Accedian Networks Inc. (Booth 412), a provider of network performance assurance solutions for Ethernet service providers, announced it has added service mapping to its Ethernet Service Assurance Platform (ESAP).

With service mapping, ESAP now enables service providers to create, manage and monitor end-to-end E-LAN and E-Line Carrier Ethernet services with its EtherNID demarcation device.

“[Service mapping] is the capability to take any customers traffic, and by examining each packet that goes through the device, determine, for example, by a VLAN or class of service or type of service, which packets to take out and create higher priority between endpoints,” explained Scott Sumner, vice president of marketing for Accedian.

He offers the example of a best-efforts Ethernet service between three points that, with the addition of Accedian’s EtherNID with service mapping, could move the VoIP traffic to a distinct E-LAN between the sites with a higher class of service. “We can actually tag the traffic and put it into an Ethernet virtual circuit or a Carrier Ethernet service and then we can unmap it at the other end and leave the customer traffic unaffected,” he said.

Service mapping is in addition to EtherNID’s available demarcation, loopback and in-service performance testing capabilities that assure links are compliant with Metro Ethernet Forum 9 and 14 specifications. MEF 9 certification ensures service provider networks conform to the MEF definitions for Carrier Ethernet services. MEF 14 certification ensures conformance to SLA guidelines.

EtherNID includes an SLA-Meter engine that allows up to 100 simultane-ous measurements of SLA parameters at Layer 2 or Layer 3 in a point-to-point or multipoint-to-multipoint fashion. When installed at the cus-tomer premises, the EtherNID extends the management capabilities of the carrier up to the customers closet, enabling the carrier to monitor the Ethernet service delivery, test circuits locally or on an end-to-end basis, and apply advanced traffic filtering, looping and tapping functions. Models are available for networks using 10/100mbps, GigE, copper or fiber.
