Seven Stunning Facts About Microsoft’s Profits

  • Written by The VAR Guy 1
  • January 28, 2008
Each time Microsoft announces quarterly results, The VAR Guy takes a look to see how the company’s profits stack up against the competition.

Microsoft CorporateEach time Microsoft announces quarterly results, The VAR Guy takes a look to see how the company’s profits stack up against the competition. If you think open source and software as a service will destroy Microsoft, look at this stunning fact: It takes Microsoft only 10 hours to exceed the quarterly profits of Red Hat. Skeptical? Check out the math, and six other jaw-dropping facts about Microsoft’s profits.

First, let’s look at Microsoft’s latest quarterly profit of $4.707 billion. Using that figure, you can determine that Microsoft’s daily net income is about $52 million. That’s $52 million in pure profit every 24 hours. Do some quick math and you’ll learn it takes Microsoft only about…

  • Three hours to exceed Salesforce.com’s quarterly net income of $6.5 million
  • Ten hours to exceed Red Hat’s quarterly net income of $20.3 million
  • Three-and-a-half days to exceed Harley Davidson’s quarterly net income of $186.1 million
  • Ten days to exceed Target Stores’ quarterly net income of $483 million
  • Thirty days to exceed Apple’s quarterly net income of $1.58 billion
  • Thirty-three days to exceed PepsiCo’s quarterly net income of $1.7 billion
  • Seventy-six days to exceed IBM’s quarterly net income of $3.95 billion

So the next time you’re ready to bury Microsoft, look at the company’s balance sheet first. And check in with The VAR Guy for a reality check.

    yes, true, they make lots of money. BUT them’s that earn a lot, spend a lot.

    They will also be living up to their income stream -like me! So a fall in income of 1-10% will have great implications.

    this why they had to start the gates foundation

    taxes were killing them and they had nothing to do with all their profit.

    guess making a great operating system didn’t come to their minds.

    amazing how linux is such a supperior operating on such a low budget and microsoft can’t even produce a decent one with all this money.

    makes you wonder where all the money is going – governments, lobbyists just come to the top of my head. oh yeah and buying all those patents that provide all this innovation.

    IMHO what is more interesting about Microsoft’s profit is that:
    ~50% comes from Office
    ~30% comes from Windows

    All the other stuff they do has no ROI (xbox, server stuff, .NET, SQLserver, Virtualization …)
    I hope one day some companies will switch to openoffice, and we’ll get rid of them. I’m certainly pushing for that.

    Philippe (#5): Let’s not get carried away. MSFT’s server business — SQL Server, Exchange — is plenty profitable. As an OpenOffice user, The VAR Guy sees the benefits of open source. But that doesn’t mean he loses sight of Microsoft’s dominant platforms.

    Suezz got me thinking… how much DOES Microsoft pay in taxes? I’m pretty sure it’s more than I do, but corporations have far better accountants than I do. I’d say it’s probably disproportionately lower than what I pay (about 25%), yet enough to turn some heads in Washington.
    Perhaps another way to look at Microsoft’s profits is to compare them to the Gross Domestic Product of some countries…

    U.S. = $11,059.3 billion
    U.K. = $2,270 billion
    Nigeria = $191.4 billion
    World $72,337,649 million
    European Union $14,953,057 million
    United States $13,543,330 million
    People’s Republic of China $11,606,336 billion
    India $4,726.537 billion
    Japan $4,346.080 billion
    Germany $2,714.469 billion
    France $2,040.109 billion
    Brazil $2,013.893 billion
    Russia $1,908.739 billion
    Italy $1,888.492 billion
    Nigeria $191.4 billion
    Microsoft $18.828 billion
    (I threw in Nigeria as a representative smaller country, otherwise it’s the top ten.) I’ve extrapolated Microsoft’s to a year, which puts it slightly ahead of Namibia’s $18.880 billion/year. That’s a LOT of politicians to buy!

    I read that Microsoft has a $50 billion checking account. Yeah, that’s not million, but billion. They can pay off any politician, run any advertisement, and sue anyone they want — just for fun.

    It’s good to be reminded of how much money can be made with good (or bad) marketing. Something I wish some big Linux backers would learn, and make an effort to create some solid competition.
    One thing this does say though is that the US is still the one place in the world where you can make ****loads of money if you can find a hole to fill in the marketplace. Whether that ends up being useful or helpful is a different story.
    Thanks VAR Guy. Cheers.

    […] Seven stunning facts about Microsoft#8217;s profits. Not-so-stunning fact number eight. 🙂 Some people still don#8217;t get it, though; they don#8217;t seem to realize that part of the reason for the modern explosion in innovation on the web and elsewhere is in large part because Microsoft has felt legally constrained in the kinds of threats they can now make against competitors. Do you really think Office for Mac would exist now if not for the DOJ case? And if Office for Mac didn#8217;t exist, do you really think OSX would be a viable competitor? If the answer to either of those is #8216;yes#8217;, you#8217;re on some very good drugs and I#8217;d like to know where you got them. 🙂 […]

    Isn’t it ironic that the Bill Gates Foundation is funneling a lot of it’s money (with a huge share being made in the US) to countries like Africa? How about establishing a loan program here in the US to help those young people who bought the Microsoft Products and are now out of work.

    Seems young Mr. Gates has forgotten where and how he got his start.
