PacketSentry Virtual Probe can monitor databases, fileshares, web applications, document management and more. The whole thing runs as a guest VM that only consumes 3 percent to 5 percent of a host’s CPU resources. Since controls are deployed through a virtual machine, and the VM utility is independent of the VMware deployment architecture, Virtual Probe can implement multiple controls in a single application and react to patterns in network activity without needing to know specific IP addresses. Automated deployment of identity-based polices can then be enabled throughout the data center. This tool can also help audit internal compliance regulations, among other regulations, such as PCI, HIPAA and SOX.

Support for vSphere version 4.0 or greater or ESX version 3.5 or greater is available for PacketMotion’s virtual appliance. Plus, channel partners are the exclusive conduit of the solution. The price tag for the new virtual appliance is based on the number of VMs that will be monitored. Virtual Probe has a starting price of $4,995 for a five-pack of monitored servers per VMs, and $21,995 for a 25-pack. Expanded hypervisor support is coming in future releases.
