Office 2007: Lookin’ Good
The VAR Guy isn’t a big fan of Microsoft Office. Sure, he uses the productivity applications but he also spends more and more time using online alternatives such as Google Spreadsheets. He’s also mulling a move from Office to OpenOffice. This preference for open, online solutions allows The VAR Guy to more easily share information with workgroups.
Even so, The VAR Guy’s in the minority. The vast majority of corporate PCs still run Office, and there’s considerable opportunity for VARs to cash in on the forthcoming Office 2007, slated for release Jan. 30. Today’s Wall Street Journal gives the suite a glowing review, calling the upgrade a “Bold Redesign” with a vastly improved user interface. And IT publications such as eWeek and PC Magazine also see great improvements in the overhauled suite.
Therein lies the rub: Office 2007’s new “Ribbon” interface is a radical shift from the old menu system. For the short term, this could slow transitions to Office 2007. But over the long haul, it also provides new opportunities for IT training centers.
